VOLLIS SIMPSON II

Sawmen are also popular with Vollis. They and the saw move back and forth when a gust comes along.

Here's a close-up of a tall, narrow whirligig whose parts spin sideways. This photo is quite cropped as well as shrunk, so click to see the whole thing.

This is the interior of Vollis' second shed, a short ride from the farm. He unlocked it and opened it for me, which he says he doesn't do for most folks (who come back to mess with it, unfortunately). There are more whirligigs here than in his workshed, even, and they are all completed.

The man himself, standing among his creations. He's a bit quiet, but he'll tell you anything you want to know.

This is a flag that Vollis began after September 11. Enlarged, you can see it says God Bless America across the top and In God We Trust across the bottom. It's set into a white disc with red, white and blue handheld-size whirligigs all around it.

The companion to the flag disc.
